In Atika the windows are placed high and low. The high-placed windows, working as air outlets, are placed on the sloping roof, oriented north and south. The low-placed windows are installed on all four facades. In summer time the inlet air is taken from the cool northside of the building. This facilitates the flow of air through the stack effect and cross-ventilation, following a strategy of selective shading and ventilating, helping to reduce substantially the indoor air temperature.

More important yet is the fact that air movement, even if the air is hot, helps to improve the perceived indoor comfort.

In summer, the use of a ventilation schedule, opening or closing windows depending on exterior and interior conditions, helps to lower the temperature at the start of the day.
